My Love Letter to Oysters
Growing up in a seafood-loving family, I spent my youth fishing off Cape Cod, going to the beach, and ordering shellfish, particularly oysters, every chance I got. But in college, I noticed many of my peers were hesitant to try them. I was determined to change that.
Oysters, often misunderstood, are far more versatile than people realize. Beyond their culinary appeal, oysters play a vital role in ocean conservation and seafood sustainability. By breaking their exclusive reputation and highlighting their impact, I hope to inspire others to embrace oysters in all their forms.
And what better way to do that than with a cookbook?
Offering A New Perspective
Shucked challenges misconceptions about oysters and the high-end visual branding often associated with seafood. While many brands lean on nautical or minimalist aesthetics, Shucked takes a bold, playful approach to make oysters more accessible.
Black Pearl: A Perfect Shucking Match!
The foundation for Shucked's visual identity was laid with Black Pearl, the custom display typeface created for the book.
Inspired by traditional blackletter typography, the letterforms feature bold diagonals and sharp serifs, mimicking the ruggedness of oyster shells, making them a perfect fit for this project!

Photography
The book's images embraces a candid flash photogrpahy style. Each impromptu shot captures people enjoying oyster dishes together, emphasizing their inherently social nature, and reinforces the idea that oysters, and Shucked's recipes, are meant for everyone.
Putting it all Together…
Vibrant colors, hand-drawn illustrations, and layered textures give Shucked a playful energy. The book also uses a cheeky, lighthearted voice. From its title to playful phrases like "Let's Shuck" and "Like it Raw?", the brand makes oysters fun, cover to cover!
These elements are designed to engage a broader audience, making oysters more inviting to those who may have been previously excluded from the seafood world.
HIGHLIGHTED SPREADS

See Shucked in Action!
Shucked is split into two main sections: education and execution. The first half explores the history, environmental impact, global varieties of oysters, and essential techniques, making oysters approachable for every reader. The second half brings this knowledge to life with recipes, organized by preparation method: raw, baked, grilled, fried, steamed, and more.
